December 2004 Update: Reed Square Redevelopment

Around the Vicarage itself not much has changed - although the hoardings have been replaced with fences. However, the High Street which joins Tangmere Drive to Turnhouse Road is nearly finished (this is a new street which cuts over the site of the old library). Reed Square is now only the builder’s compound... and our address for a little longer.

High Street East High Street East

This is the new High Street from St Cuthbert’s Place (the church is on the right). On the left is the builder’s compound - all that is left of Reed Sq.

From the end of the finished bit of the High Street towards the middle. The red brick building on the right is the new Police Station.

The High Street from the middle. The church is on the left and the vicarage is in the middle. This end of the street is due to be finished in January.

At one end of the High Street is the new Police Station.

Again from the middle, but this end of the High Street is finished and the first shop (a supermarket) is open.

November 2004 Update: Reed Square Redevelopment

Things aren’t quite finished - the weather caused a number of delays. Around the Church not much is obviously different from September apart from the new Vicarage and the War Memorial. The next couple of months should see some dramatic finishing touches.

Just in time for the Remembrance Sunday ceremonies, the paving around the War Memorial has been completed. Next will be a garden beyond the paving and railings.

This is a side-on view of the front of the house. The scaffolding is to allow the front door and first floor window to be put in. The other big hole is the garage. The lounge is on top of the garage and the study is the room to the right of the front door.

Windows in but doors open, the back of the Vicarage is nearly finished. A couple of lights to be added, down-pipes from the terrace - and a garden!

The roof is on and the windows are in, finally a feeling for what the house will be like.

September 2004 Update: Reed Square Redevelopment

Some things haven’t changed much since the July update, but the Vicarage has certainly grown. The first phase of the development is due to be complete by early November when work will start on the north side of the High Street and the rest of St Cuthbert’s Place.

The last row of bricks has been laid - and it’s just as well! Because the Vicarage will have a ‘monopitch’ roof, the rear is very tall. As we watched it grow, it seemed to never end.

The view out of the front door of the current Vicarage. The Church is on the left with the foundations of the new ‘St Cuthbert’s Place’ road in the middle (the current Vicarage will soon go under this!) The building on the right is the new home of the local housing association. It’s rear wall is blank as the new homes on St Cuthbert’s Place will join on here.

This shows the side of the Vicarage nearest the Church and the new public square. The bit sticking out at the back is the kitchen, with the main living area in the middle. You can just see the study at the front.

The first picture of the front of the house shows that it is mainly roof! The main living area is on the left with the study under the long roof, along with a couple of bedrooms.

July 2004 Update: Reed Square Redevelopment

If you’ve seen what the area looked like in early June, you will see quite a difference in how things look. Although very much unfinished, the shape of things to come is becoming more and more apparent.

The rear of the new High Street is near completion on what was the East car park. More of the West car park has been dug up, but the tarmac in the foreground is the beginning of its replacement.

The area in front of church will be an attractive open space with steps, trees and benches. In the meantime, the work to get there continues...

This is the same view as on the June page and shows how the new car park, access road and new vicarage are taking shape.

You still need a little imagination, but this is the back door under the lounge window of the new vicarage. The kitchen is on the left. It will be lovely when it’s done!

June 2004 Update: Reed Square Redevelopment

These photos give an impression of the area as it was in early June 2004 - it certainly seems a mess. Have another look in October when it should resemble more the marvellous plans for the area.

Fr. Darren Miller

What was the east car park is fast becoming the back of the High Street.
The green area will become the Church Garden, the residential part of St Cuthbert’s place and the access to the new church car park.

Just for comparison: this is the Vicarage as it was in Summer 2002. The photo was taken from the east car park which is now under the new High Street (see first picture).

This was (and still is!) the drive to the Vicarage and more parking. The new Vicarage is behind the blue and white hoarding. This area will be the new church car park and access road.

With the hoarding around most of the new Vicarage, it is difficult to get a picture, but here is the back door, kitchen and garden - you need a little imagination!
